HISTORY
The Fayetteville Free Library began as a subscription reading room in 1906 when 50 public-minded citizens banded together to share their periodical subscriptions at 114 East Genesee Street in the Village of Fayetteville. In 1911, a permanent charter was received from the Board of Regents. The name was changed from “reading room” to “free library”. In 1922, the need for more space became critical. The library purchased the McViccar home at 111 East Genesee Street after the passing of Harriet McViccar, one of the library’s early founders and the original librarian. This facility was renovated to provide better accessibility and service to the community in 1968 and again in 1992.
In 2003, the library once again responded to the need for more space for the library’s growing collections, programs and services. The former Stickley furniture factory at 300 Orchard Street was purchased and renovated in the first of a multi-phased plan designed to accommodate patrons of all ages with state-of-the-art technology, the highest quality collections a wide range of program opportunities as well as ample community meeting spaces. Since 2003, the library has completed three additional phases of facility development which have included enhanced technology access, additional community meeting spaces, expanded and improved staff and volunteer work spaces and a popular café.
The Library remains true to its mission of providing free and open access to information in a lifelong learning community center.
